Information for Clients

Self-Referrals

You do not need a referral to make an appointment to see Angela. You can self-refer instead. While this will affect your eligibility for Medicare rebates, you may still be eligible for rebates through your private health insurance fund if you are covered for clinical psychology services but you need to check eligibility. See further details below.

Paediatrician or Psychiatrist Referrals

You or your child may be referred for Medicare rebatable clinical psychology services by a specialist if your child or adolescent is referred by their Paediatrician, or you or your family member is referred by a Psychiatrist. All specialist referrals can be made to the practice, Awen Psychology Perth, or directly to Ms Angela Carroll, Clinical Psychologist.

Diagnostic Assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorder

If you or your child are being referred for an Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnostic Assessment following a diagnostic assessment by the Paediatrician or Psychiatrist, you may be able to claim up to four rebateable sessions under the Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder and Disability Services Scheme. This scheme is available to those up to the age of 25.

As of July 2024, these four rebateable sessions offered a rebate of $96.65 per 50 minute individual consultation.

Alternatively, if you do not have a Paediatrician or Psychiatrist referral, the Autism Spectrum Disorder assessment appointment for you or your child may be partly claimable under private health insurance, but you should firstly check with your health fund regarding your eligibility.

For further information about the costs and process of Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessments, please contact the practice.

General Practitioner Referrals through the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative

The purpose of the Better Access Initiative is to improve treatment and management of mental illness within the Community. Using a team-based approach between General Practitioners (GP) and other healthcare workers, including Clinical Psychologists; Medicare benefits are available for selected mental health services.

You may visit your GP and ask to be assessed for a Mental Health Care Plan. If you qualify for a Mental Health Care Plan, your GP can provide a referral to Awen Psychology Perth, or directly to Ms Angela Carroll, Clinical Psychologist. You must bring your Mental Health Care Plan and doctor’s referral letter with you on your first visit in order to claim the Medicare rebate.

As at July 2024, the Mental Health Care Plan enables you to access a rebate of $141.85 per 50+ minute individual consultation for up to six individual sessions. After the initial six sessions (individual, group or both), you will need to visit your GP and request a Mental Health Care Plan Review and Doctor’s referral letter to determine whether you qualify for an additional course of treatment. Please note: there are a maximum of six individual rebatable sessions in any one referral or a maximum 10 individual rebatable sessions in any one calendar year.
